Ahhh the weekends…composed of staying up, sleeping in, and brunching. Even though the concept of brunch (breakfast-lunch for those foreign to this terminology) is not a new, it seems like millennials have given brunches their own recognized spot amongst the meals, turning them into grand outings and stay-ins.
And before any of you go and say, “oh those millennials, screwing up everything” or “pfff these millennials are complaining that they can’t afford to buy a house yet they go out for brunch?” let me say that
A). Ummm, don’t you mean transforming? I mean, what was brunch before hand? Some half-assed, “Oh I woke up at 11:00 and want to eat. I guess I can go *insert generic chain diner here*” Now it’s “We’ll meet at *insert cute cafe with local, organic, and sustainable options* at 11:00 am. I called and got reservations. I heard their flax and hemp biscuits with homemade marionberry jam are out of this world.”
B). Give us a break(fast)! Yea we can’t afford a house. You’re talking hundreds of thousands of dollars for a shitty shack of property verses $15 for a meal that technically is counting as two! Yes, we’re that broke that we have to glamorize brunch to make it socially acceptable to eat one less meal in our day.
C). Most of you reading this are probably millennials any ways. Or have no problems with the concept of brunch.
So ABC ranting aside, we (millennials) also don’t always go out for brunch. Especially if you’re vegan. Looking at a standard brunch menu everything has egg, breakfast meats, or dairy in it. Usually the only vegan things on a brunch menu are a cup of fruit and oatmeal (and you know how I feel about oatmeal). My friends and I however are crafters in the kitchen and do AMAZING brunches at each others places. There are so much tasty plant-based dishes (and not an oatmeal in sight).
